Literature Text

from the shelter
we both watch the horizon
heat lightning...beautiful
9-1-13 SM2

quiet here-
orange train passing
under the thundering sky
9-1-13 RD

melodic song
industrial counterpoint
to delicate tempest
9-1-13 SM2

testing the engine
drumbeat skips
and reverb guitar revs
9-2-13 RD

overhead streetlights
each an island
of insect devotion
9-2-13 SM2

dinnertime
at the kitchen window
a huge blue dragonfly
9-2-13 RD

head turning
this way and that
the cats prey taunts
9-2-13 SM2

dig them out of hiding
the kleenex shall not escape
my kitty wrath
9-2-13 RD

Out! Out! Tis' Havoc cry!
on the blasted heath
So foul and fair a day
9-2-13 SM2

and then a rest
lap time needed
when cometh football season?
9-3-13 RD

remote well hidden
mittens left in it's place
who could it have been?
9-3-13 SM2

clever disguise
black cat
yellow with pollen
9-3-13 RD

blending in the field
such stealth in approaching
quiet, so very quiet
9-3-13 SM2

at last the prey captured
a full bowl of dog food
my reward
9-3-13 RD

sunny day,
elongated shadows
i will sleep between them
9-3-13 SM2

summer evening
long shadows
walk alongside
9-4-13 RD

narrow path wandering
lakeside activity
quiet circles...then another
9-4-13 SM2

on the tideline
two tall shadows
holding hands
9-5-13 RD

waves play about shells
paths erased, hide and seek
full moon, midnight...sea turtles
9-5-13 SM2

too hot to hurry
in a scrap of noonday shade
a desert tortoise waits
9-5-13 RD

passing dragonfly
pondering new route
to nearest pond
9-6-13 SM2

blue dragonfly
blue spruce
blue sky floating cloud
9-6-13 RD

an island in shadow
traversing uneven path
determined to reach reflections
9-6-13 SM2

tide coming in
black step stones
between reflected sky
9-7-13 RD

tidepool...curious sight
starfish, a bit of kelp
and sea gull ripples
9-7-13 SM2

a hundred, a thousand
snailshell spirals
universe in a tidepool
9-9-13 RD

evening light slips
against horizons edge
wounded sky...so much red
9-9-13 SM2

from a faraway fire
traveling smoke
feeds blazing sunsets
9-10-13 RD

sparks rising
swimming in a dark sky
infant stars are born
9-10-13 SM2

these mudpuddles
reflecting only
grey sky
9-11-13 RD

tiny circles form
faint sigh of rain
dragonfly vanity
9-11-13 SM2

rain falling on
rain rushing down
raining still
9-13-13 RD

tiny turbulence,
between the rose bushes
pathway transformed
9-13-13 SM2

wildflowers blooming
in the spaces
where houses used to be
9-13-13 RD

suburban Serengeti
domain of many
ruled by house cats in exile
9-13-13 SM2

barn cat
a curl of stripes
on the saddle
9-14-13 RD

putting to rest
the notion of herding
cats go there own way
9-14-13 SM2

raining hard
but cats want out-
crowded on the windowsill
9-14-13 RD

no shift in opinion
waiting for house staff
to follow with umbrella
9-15-13 SM2

black cat shadows
roaming the wet grass
searching for the sunny spot
9-16-13 RD

refracted light
tiny gemstones adorn
dew on whiskers
9-16-13 SM2

ebony coat
emerald eyes
cats are my treasure
9-16-13 RD

light footed storm
soft rumblings
wrapped in fur
9-16-13 SM2

four feline feet
clawed into tennis ball-
dog can't have it back
9-17-13 RD

short term victory
canine thought process
more direct than subtle
9-17-13 SM2

not enough fun for cats
we need
the dog's toys, too
9-17-13 RD

canine treasures hidden
in diverse places
not all buried...some are decoys
9-17-13 SM2

This cat food is no good-
trade with the dog
like it nor not
9-18-13 RD

acceptable arrangement
canines trading up
table scraps too good for you
9-18-13 SM2

I pet the dog
with my claws
and she runs away
9-18-13 RD

never far
from food or shelter
reluctant truce
9-18-13 SM2

first chilly evening
cat tail curled
to cover his toes
9-21-13 RD

creaking floorboards
eyes open...calculating
naked feet beware
9-21-13 SM2

pull my feet up-
predator watching
from beneath the couch
9-22-13 RD

island of safety
safe for the moment
but the fridge holds sweet treasures
9-22-13 SM2

nightmare
a freckle of nightlight
the only safe place
9-23-13 RD

leap of faith
infinite pause
landing safely
9-23-13 SM2

windowsill from bookcase
impossible angle?
not for talented toes
9-24-13 RD

perfect landing
silent shadow
theme song plays in head
9-24-13 SM2

soft cat belly
purring and complaining
at the same time
9-25-13 RD

feline conundrum
metaphysical, higher mathematics
no wait, it's string theory
9-25-13 SM2

A moment's distraction
while cats
open the dog food bag
9-27-13 RD

particle physics
esoterically nuanced
chess pieces now moving
9-27-13 SM2

matching wits
who gets the cat bed
who the string toy
9-27-13 RD

tangled thoughts
riddles once played
so begins another day
9-27-13 SM2

oh what tangled webs
we weave with
a stolen ball of yarn
9-28-13 RD

twisted trails here and there
leading back to first beginnings
just behind the potted plants
9-28-13 SM2

frightening noises
behind the bookcase
cats have found something
9-28-13 RD

epic battle
heroic deeds
trophy laid at feet
9-28-13 SM2

I love you Daddy
see I saved for you
the mouse tail
9-29-13 RD

placed with others
a box of memories
and whisker kisses
9-29-13 SM2

How many years does one cat get?
Just love me, feed me
open the window, please.
9-30-13 RD

time moves at different rates
for those who wear their whiskers long
but intersects exactly where it needs to be
9-30-13 SM2

whiskers sparkle
with dewdrops
from the kitchen sink
9-30-13 RD

from curtain gaps
shafts of light slip
shadow transformed brilliantly
9-30-13 SM2
